Judging by the numbers of signed up artists and photographers they seem extremely popular. But do these online galleries actually sell the work they display? Well yes, quite often. When I was in school I had a graphic design professor – a very smart individual who graduated from Yale and whose expertise was fonts. I spent two hours a day for an entire semester building fonts with a pencil and a clipboard. As the professor did not know how to use a computer, he did not require any of his students to either. Unwanted passages of color can be scraped off the canvas any number of times without injury to the surface. One color can be painted over another, drawing and proportions can be corrected, and all the nuances of light and shadow can be studied experimentally. The painting can be put aside at any time, to be picked up and continued at a later date. Some beginners choose oil without considering other media because of a reverence for the “genuine oil painting.” When they take up painting as a hobby they want to produce “pictures that show the actual…

No visit to New York would be complete without a visit to Rockefeller Center. Located in midtown Manhattan at 50th Street, the complex spans 5th and 7th Avenues, is easily accessible from anywhere in the city and contains many more sights than the average New Yorker is aware! Rockefeller Center is synonymous with the notorious industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller who became America’s first billionaire. Making up Rockefeller Center are Radio City Music Hall, The GE Building and many works of art. Radio City is of…

The first phase of the oil painting process consists of drawing the scene on your canvas. Here are a few tips: * Drawing – Unless you are into complete abstract art (and even then) it is absolutely necessary that you have some drawing skills. In fact, personally, I almost always start a painting with a drawing, be it in charcoal, graphite pencil, or thin paint. I find it reassuring that, by the time I start the real painting, the whole scene is already in place. * The Four Basic Shapes – I base my drawings on four basic geometric shapes: the sphere, the cylinder, the cone, and the cube. Just about every object can be built from these four forms….
