Graffiti to Fine Artist
Feedback from Shawnta W.
Well it all start with graffiti.
Being a kid in the back seat of a car on the freeway, you always see graffiti everywhere in California. The different colors and technique inspired me and I wanted to try it. That was when I was in elementary. Me doing graffiti slowly turn into me drawing cartoon character on paper and clothes. It didn’t help that one of my older cousins had this Warmer Bros animation art book (the characters and creators). By this time I was in Jr. High but I was more into fashion than art. The whole art thing didn’t really hit me until later on in high school.
I had bought this book THE BEAT OF URBAN ART by Justin Bua, he had this hip-hop graffiti vibe to his art work that kinda blew my mind. which lean to be enrolling in this computer graphic class, in my Jr year, where I was weirdly introduced to surrealism and I had to illustrate my own version of surrealism on a computer. After that in my sr. year I decided to take my first and sadly only art/paining class where I was not only reintroduced to Surrealism but also introduced to Realism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, and last but not least Pop Art which also blew my mind.
My first real experience with drawing/ painting was when I had to do this self portrait. We used the grid method and it was in this Mark Lawrence style where each square is painted different. My only regret is that I didn’t take painting/ art class earlier, I feel like I would be way better at doing whatever it is that I do when I draw.
After High school I went to FIDM for two years, more so for fashion than art but now, I kind of want to do paint/ draw more than fashion or designing.
I just want to learn more and better myself when it comes to art.
