Solemn Student
Feedback from Csilla Budai
I am but a lowly art student, not even an undergraduate, working towards a goal which seems attainable yet distant.
When I was much younger, I discovered an attraction to literature, the arts and generally cultural development through visuals and sensations. I was much too young (10, 11) to be reading morbid pieces of literature and analysing controversial paintings. Though, it helped teach me a lot of morals and social niceties that I failed to recognize at the time, especially considering I have a particular amount of autistic tendencies restraining me to this day. The art has embedded into my vision, and assisted me with my outlook on society as I grew ever older.
The creative element crept upon me over time, and I believe it hit a threshold when I reached the age of 14. I had urges to travel around London, make use of my surroundings in this golden trove of culture. My parents found this passion unusual, but they accepted it quickly with my evident joy. With every gallery I visited, I found a new motivation and a new urge to create, and all I would need is the tools to do so.
Thus, I practised, indulging myself in the creation of the arts and focusing on finding my own techniques. However, there came a time (fairly recently actually) where other peoples’ techniques became more interesting than the ones I had practised. Quicker, more efficient methods, expressive methods, more impressionistic methods… I found myself enthralled in the delicate differences that artists have. I am currently attending more and more lectures at various unis and colleges, analysing pieces of artwork through essays. And, of course, I am doing research online. Lessons and schemes such as this one itself have captured my attention due to the differences.
In conclusion, my quest for knowledge is far from stagnant. As a student, I am building a portfolio to present my findings. As an artist, I am pursuing a seemingly eternal path to expressing culture and identity visually, in every brushstroke and layer of gesso beneath.
My favourite artist is Francois Boucher, because I am a fan of romanticism in all art forms. Also, Jean Honore Fragonard because of the amount of controversial pieces he created which redefined the way we perceive women in Rococo-era work.
My main challenge is painting is to be able to present my knowledge through hosting lectures in the far future at art institutions, so I can hear individual's’ opinions and passions as every artist differs. I will have completed university by this point and I would deem myself knowledgeable enough in the arts to do such things, as well as being able to see the promise in other people. Physically, my challenge in painting is to create a perfect fleshtone palette for my paintings, without making major mistakes in the saturation and hue of the portrait.
Layering and flesh tone selection, the way the artist was able to capture the light so perfectly without obvious failure/flaws (such as in "A Lady at Her Mirror" by Jean Raoux). I'm so curious about lighting as I seem to fail to capture the exact tones and saturation required. I believe there is a thorough need to discuss selective palettes and symbols and significance of colours (at least in more detail).
Excellent piece!
