Old Masters Academy

The Accidental Artist

The Accidental Artist

Feedback from Kim Yates

I accidentally started painting about a year ago in an attempt to write a children’s book. I decided to try and draw my characters, which lead to trying to draw them in colored pencils, then watercolor, acrylic and finally oil – which by then I was hooked.

Since that time, I have done research online and found myself drawn to the Old Masters. I have even visited a museum-for the first time in my life-and found that if not for my daughter and husband ( who were ready to go long before me) I could have stayed all day just studying and admiring the paintings.

So having come across the Web Art Academy, where Natalie Richy teaches how the old masters painted, it has been a perfect fit for me!
Thanks Natalie. 🙂

I think the “contemporary old master” is Frederick Church. I’m not sure if he qualifies as a contemporary old master” artist, but his tonal range of color reminds me so much of Rembrandt.

My favourite artist is Richard Scmid. I love how he has mastered the use of color.

My main challenge in art is tones of color. It’s difficult to get the right tone of color for specific areas plus to keep the right tonal harmony throughout the painting.
