If I am ever going to be an artist I better get started before I run out of time
Feedback from Maurice Hershberger
I am now in my 80th year and only began painting from books, videos and workshops 10 years ago.
So why did I start so late in life? Like so many others out there, when I was a teenager I wanted to study art but my father and the counselor at high school totally dissuaded me from going to art school, so I headed out on a different path.
I picked something that could earn me a living and something I would like. As the years rolled by I found myself describing all the paperwork I was doing as “works of art”, even though they were far from that, being merely columns of numbers.
Finally when I reached my 70th year (still working) I said to myself, ” if I am ever going to be an artist I better get started before I run out of time”
Trying to find out where the “secrets” are is very daunting to say the least. There is a scrap here an a hint over there but it seems there is no one place to go for this ol’ geezer. Maybe this is because I am only able to see or understand up to the point of my personal knowledge and experience at the moment.
I have mostly been painting ala prima and mostly quick studies on small supports…5×7, 6×8, 8×10 & 9×12 canvas, linen or paper. Learning some of the basics of classical art would really be enjoyable.
