Art as Inspiration: My Path to Oil Painting

Art as Inspiration: My Path to Oil Painting

Feedback from Michael Swaine

I started oil painting at a very late time, in my sixties. I used to draw as a youth, but always thought that oil painting was too difficult a medium to attempt. As I reached my late fifties, I began to become more immersed in the experience of viewing great oil paintings in museums in America and Europe. I had always enjoyed viewing great art, but as I got older, I discovered that experience touched me more deeply, giving me a feeling of being in touch with the eternal. Some great works by 19th century realists such as Courbet had a particularly profound effect on me. …

My longwinding road to fullfill my wish

My longwinding road to fullfill my wish

Feedback from Jody Ditzel

I have always wanted to learn to paint and draw, as a child i was able to draw, even won a prize when I was 12. I drew my teacher in school, and this drawing was used in an exhibition of drawings made by students in my hometown in the Netherlands.

When I hit puberty life hit me too, I left home when I was 14 and stopped my creative learning process. Always longing to do that but had to struggle mentally and physically to remain healthy and alive. I managed quite well, got better at living and even managed to build a career.

Drawing and cartooning since a very young age. Appreciated the Renaissance masters, but youth and lack of discipline blocked a true growth. Now older, I have set to learn more and apply such skills in my vocation of caricature.

Long Lost Love

Long Lost Love

Feedback from Sajjad

To begin with, let me tell you a brief about myself. I am an emergency medicine physician from India. I do paintings often after my shifts as a means to relax myself.

Painting for me started at a very young age in school. I participated in many regional drawing and painting competitions at a very young age. I always thought about creating my own master piece just like the old masters. When I was selected for the elementary training in 9th Grade, which could have been a stepping stone towards an art career, my father passed away in a tragic accident. This led me to drop out of the course and I concentrated on academics. …

My love story with the Art…

My love story with the Art…

Feedback from Valentina

I am fascinated about nature’s transient beauty. In my work I am trying to internalize it. I like quick painting sessions, that last 2-3 hours, so called “ Alla Prima “ – a method of direct painting from nature. I love Plain Air sessions as well as still life with fresh flowers.

My affair with Art started in another country in a city of Art and Imagination, St.Petersburg, Russia. I entered the St.Petersburg University to pursue a Master Degree in Biophysics. However by the end of my study of Science, I became more and more fascinated with Art…

I make art til someone dies -The Joker

Feedback from Sara Price

I don’t really have a cool story you have not listened to over and over again, but here we go. I started off as a artist pretty young, so my first art piece when I was ten to a waitress serving me. It was my book report and we had to draw it in the style of a movie poster, I got twenty dollars and a f for it. (the f was because I sold it before I turned it in)

As the years went on had some shows at little places here and there. Had no money to go to school so I don’t feel like my art is where it could be. …

Inner little painter dying to grow as an artist

Feedback from Euciane

I am a 39 years single mom originally from Brazil. I’ve been working as a marriage and family therapist/ art therapist and I started painting since I was 10 years old.

I got bachelors in fine arts in 2011. I feel like I did not get to learn the techniques I needed in school. My teachers were abstract artists and did not know what I was talking about when I mentioned that I wanted to learn the “old masters” techniques. …

I love working with colours

I love working with colours

Feedback from Eugene

I am 26 years old this year and dabbled in drawing as a hobby for the past 5 years.
I have reached a point where I am stagnated by my technique and skill. I no longer just want to dabble; if I get good enough I want to become a traditional fine artist. As you can see from my drawings below, the style is very cartoonish. I want to challenge myself and paint the traditional way.

Currently, I am learning the basics from the Drawing Academy course, sketching every day in pencil in hopes to make my foundation strong. The pencil sketch below is what I have learnt from lesson 12 of the course: one point perspective. I am greatly benefitting from the course, learning invaluable basic art techniques that will serve as a foundation for quality work in the future.

It Started Because of a Dare

It Started Because of a Dare

Feedback from Marg Smith

I have no formal training. I started later in life based on a bet or dare. I attended a little art show in the small town I lived in, that as organized by a self taught artist who was teaching others how to paint in watercolour. As I was admiring what I thought was good art at that time, the organizer/teacher came along and told me that I could also paint. The conversation carried on and she said “I dare you to come for 3 evenings and I guarantee you will be painting after that.”
